The US Air Force will conduct a surveillance mission over Russia under the Open Skies Treaty starting on Monday, a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said.
The 2002 treaty allows unarmed aerial surveillance flights over the entire territory of its 34 participants.
It functions as a transparency mechanism by allowing the gathering of information about military forces and activities.
Monday’s flight will follow a trajectory previously agreed with Russian specialists, who will also be present on board.
Russian military inspectors accompanied by their American colleagues will perform surveillance flights over the United States in line with the Open Skies treaty.
It entered into force more than a decade ago and currently has 34 member states.
The aim of the treaty is to promote openness and transparency of military forces, boost mutual understanding and confidence by giving all signatories, regardless of their size, a direct role in gathering information about each other’s military activities through unarmed areal observations, and enhance opportunities for conflict prevention.
